Affiliate links

There are currently no affiliate links on this site. When they are introduced, this page will say so and the rules below will apply from the first one.

How affiliate links work here:

• The price you pay is unchanged. A commission is paid by the retailer out of its own margin.
• Commission does not decide what is recommended. Titles are selected on the merits. Where the better book cannot be linked through an affiliate programme, it is still the one recommended.
• Any page carrying an affiliate link says so on that page, not only here.

Advertising and sponsorship

As things stand, this site carries no display advertising, no sponsored placements and no third-party advertising or tracking scripts.

If any of that changes, it will be disclosed — here, and on whichever page it applies to. Where work is funded by an institution, programme or organisation, the funder is named on that work along with what it did and did not have a say in.

Independence

East Asian Journal is independently operated. It is not affiliated with, owned by, or run in partnership with any language-learning platform, application, school or commercial product, and it does not promote one.

What this site records about you

There is no analytics product on this site, no advertising network, no third-party tracking script and no cookie for tracking. Nothing you do here is sold, shared or passed to anyone.

When you read a page

One record is written, containing:

• the path you opened, this site's own hostname, and the time;
• the hostname of the site you arrived from — for example facebook.com. Not the full address, not a query string, and not a search term: that reduction happens on our server, so the rest never reaches storage;
• your network address, with the final part removed. What is stored identifies a network — roughly a neighbourhood's worth of connections — rather than a single device;
• the approximate location that address resolves to: city, region, country and postal area;
• the browser identification string your browser sends with every request, which names the browser, its version and the operating system.

This is a readership log and it is kept. It is how an independent publication with no analytics product, no advertising network and no third-party scripts can tell whether anyone is reading it, from where, and which pages hold them. Nothing in it is sold, shared or passed to anyone.

There is no account, no cookie, no login and no identifier assigned to you. Nothing here is joined to a name, an email address or a profile. But it should be said plainly rather than dressed up: a network address and a browser string, taken together, are reasonably distinctive, and repeat visits from the same network and browser will look alike in this log.

If you arrive from a link we published

When this publication posts a link somewhere — a social account, a newsletter — it may add three campaign tags to the address: utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. They identify the link, not you. If they are present when you arrive, they are recorded alongside a small, fixed set of actions so that we can tell which posts brought readers here: that a page was opened, that a link on it was followed, that a search ran or returned nothing, and that a mailing-list signup was started or completed.

What is deliberately not recorded: any other part of the address, any other query parameter, the page fragment, the full site you came from, and — importantly — what you searched for. A failed search records only that one happened. Your words stay yours.

These tags are held for the duration of the browser tab and are discarded when you close it. There is still no visitor identifier of any kind, so two visits cannot be joined together, and nothing here can be traced back to a person. If you would rather not send the tags at all, delete everything from the ? onwards before opening the link — the page behaves identically without them.

If you join the mailing list

Your name and email address are stored, together with which of our sites you signed up from. They are used to send you what you signed up for and nothing else — never sold, never rented, never shared. Ask and the entry is deleted; no reason is required and none will be asked for.

What is stored locally on your device

One item: your light-or-dark preference, so the site does not change appearance between visits. It never leaves your browser and clearing site data removes it.

Third parties

The exchange-rate figures in the homepage banner are fetched from a public rates service when the page loads, which means that service can see the request. It receives no information about you beyond what any web request necessarily carries. Audio and images are served from this site.

Asking for your data, or its deletion

Write to editor@eastasianjournal.com. Mailing-list entries can be removed on request. Readership records are not tied to an identity, so there is generally nothing to retrieve — which is the intended outcome rather than an inconvenience.

Corrections to this page

Changes to any of the above are logged on the corrections page like any other correction. A disclosure that quietly changes is not a disclosure.
