Editorial
Editorial standards
What this publication claims, what it does not claim, and how to check it.
What EAJ is not
EAJ is not a peer-reviewed journal and does not describe itself as one. There is no external review board and no editorial process that would justify that term. The name reflects the subject and the register, not a validation process.
Sourcing
- Every quantitative claim names its source and the year the figure refers to, which is often not the year of publication.
- Where a comparison spans countries, figures come from a single series wherever one exists, because national statistics frequently define the same term differently.
- Where no single series covers the comparison, the page says so rather than silently mixing sources.
- Estimates are labelled as estimates. Contested figures are labelled as contested, with the nature of the dispute stated.
Attribution
Reference material, data tables and factual explainers are published under the house byline, EAJ Editorial. This is normal practice for reference works, where the value lies in the sourcing rather than in an individual voice.
Reference and data material is compiled and checked by the editor. As of this revision EAJ has one editor and no outside reviewers, and nothing here claims otherwise. Where a piece is reviewed by someone with relevant subject expertise, that person is named on the page along with the basis of their expertise; where no such review has happened, the page says so instead.
Translation
Material translated from Japanese, Korean or Chinese is labelled with its translation status. A machine-assisted translation that has not been checked against the original is marked as such and is never presented as an authoritative rendering. Terms whose translation is itself contested are given in the original script alongside the English.
Contact
Corrections, source challenges and editorial questions go to editor@eastasianjournal.com. A message about a factual error is answered before anything else.
Audio
Some pieces carry a recorded companion. It is not a reading of the article — it takes one idea the piece supports and follows it, so listening and reading are not substitutes for each other. Audio never plays on its own and is not downloaded until you press play.
Corrections
Errors are corrected in place and logged on the corrections page with the date and the substance of the change. Pages are not silently edited. Where a correction changes a conclusion rather than a detail, the note says so explicitly.
Independence
EAJ is independently operated and is not affiliated with any language platform, product or commercial partner. It carries no display advertising and no sponsored placements.
Links to books and materials may carry an affiliate tag, which pays a commission on a purchase without changing the price and does not decide what gets recommended. Any page carrying one says so on that page. The terms are set out under disclosures.
Reader experience
This site uses no interstitials, newsletter pop-ups, cookie walls, autoplay media, or third-party advertising or tracking scripts. Pages are static and load in full before you interact with them.
