The instruments that actually changed how East Asia writes: 21 of them, from 1443 to 2013, each dated, attributed to its issuing body and linked to the source. Five jurisdictions read against one spine, so that the synchrony is visible: four states legislated on their own script within thirteen years of the war ending, each by a different kind of instrument. Where the popular account departs from the text of the instrument (hangul’s promulgation, the 1948 hanja ban, Pinyin as a replacement script), the entry says so and cites the primary source.

Kyoto ranks eleventh among Japanese travellers and third among foreign ones. Seoul is eleventh for Korean overnight trips, behind Gangwon by a factor of six. And among Japanese people in their twenties, travel to see family and friends slightly outweighs travel for leisure. Three national statistical agencies publish all of this; almost none of it is read in English.
