Keiretsu

A grouping of Japanese firms connected by sustained capital or commercial relationships. Horizontal formations may include cross-shareholdings and a main bank; vertical formations often connect a large manufacturer with suppliers or distributors, sometimes through unequal control relationships.

Commonly mistaken for
Not a direct Japanese equivalent of a chaebol. Many chaebol are family-controlled across diverse affiliates; horizontal keiretsu are conventionally described through banking and interfirm ties, while vertical keiretsu can involve dominant buyers. The coherence of horizontal groups as unified economic entities is contested: Miwa and Ramseyer challenge it, while Japanese reference works continue to describe several observable forms of affiliation. These relations also changed after the 1990s.
Worked example: Toyota suppliers as a vertical affiliation
The Britannica account identifies Toyota as an example of vertical keiretsu relations. Begin with the automobile manufacturer, then follow its recurring purchases of parts from firms linked by supply contracts and, in some cases, capital or personnel ties. Those connections differ from the main-bank and cross-shareholding relationships typically associated with horizontal groupings such as Mitsubishi. The Japanese encyclopedia also allows vertical relations to involve dominance by a large buyer, so lack of a controlling firm cannot define every keiretsu. Miwa and Ramseyer dispute the economic coherence of horizontal groups; their criticism should not be silently generalized to every documented supplier relationship.
