In Chinese this is not primarily a geographic term. It is a byword for lawlessness and disappearance, carrying a weight that northern Myanmar does not begin to transmit in English. It has also absorbed places that are not in northern Myanmar: Myawaddy, the site most associated with the compounds, is in Karen State in the southeast on the Thai border opposite Mae Sot — and is still filed under 缅北.

What English gets wrong
Translating it as a neutral compass direction. A Chinese reader encountering 缅北 receives a moral and emotional signal; an English reader given northern Myanmar receives a map reference. The geographic drift is lost as well.

northern Myanmar as the literal rendering, with a note that in Chinese usage the term carries strong connotation and extends beyond the region it names.
