Telecom-network fraud

In plain English

The PRC statutory category for fraud committed by telecommunications or network means. It is the Chinese counterpart to Japan’s 特殊詐欺 and Korea’s 전기통신금융사기 — one phenomenon, three statutory vocabularies.

Register

Legal term. Defined by statute. Carries legal consequences.

The instrument

中华人民共和国反电信网络诈骗法

Anti-Telecom and Network Fraud Law of the PRC

A dedicated national statute for this offence category

Literally

Telecom-network fraud; 电诈 is the clipped form.

What English gets wrong

Rendering it telecom fraud drops 网络, network or internet, which is in the legal term itself. It also understates the category: this is a named statutory offence with its own dedicated national law, not a generic descriptor.

What to write instead

telecom-network fraud, giving 电信网络诈骗 and noting 电诈 as the everyday clipped form.
